Ben Yeoh on: Charlie Munger Life Lessons; Tate Exchange Space; Writing Craft; WordProcess/Autism
Hi
Arts - Investing - Personal/Autism.
This week it was back to work for me, but we did manage a late Friday visit to the Tate Exchange. Currently the Thick/erBlackLines collective are there charting Black British Women in art, curating, gallaries... The space is set up for freelancers to work and co-share the space (12-6p, Thu-Sun this month), there are few better spots for a writer or maker to come and have a think. If you want to see Oscar and me have a secret dance there, Click through here to the post.
I revisited some Charlie Munger writing. Munger is a billionaire investor and Warren Buffet's business partner. Buffet is more famous for his plain-speaking wit and wisdom, but Munger is as good. Munger spoke at a Harvard address amusingly about life lessons on how to be miserable, but with the guiding principle of "Always Invert". He promotes (1) being unreliable, (2) never learning from others and (3) giving up. Munger shares misery advice from Johnny Carson. If you want to read his speech, click through here.
On writing craft, I've been practising my muscles with Ursula Le Guin. She writes: "A skill is something you know how to do skill in writing frees you to write what you want to write. Craft enables art. That's luck in art. You can learn skill, you can earn it. I'm not going to discuss writing as self-expression, as therapy, or as a spiritual adventure. It can be all of those things, but first of all - and in the end to - it is an art, a craft, a making. And that is the joy of it. To make something well is to give yourself to it. to seek wholeness, to follow spirit. To learn to make something well can take your whole life. It's worth it." I highlight an exercise she has on cutting your writing, recalling the advise to "Murder your darlings" - read more here.
